I am. All our cats and dogs have been rescues or have found us. Never t'other way round. I'd love to have a puppy once- but honestly, I just could not, knowing so many out there need good homes.

Our next dog will come from a long way away- Djerba. A friend found her and rescued her, and she is currently staying with a wonderful dog carer whilst all the vaccinations and passports are being done. Her name is Yata.

Yes

We got them as badly socialised kittens. They are real characters. Both can be loving but one is very gentle and the other likes her own way and will try to kill you if she doesn't get it.

Wouldn't change them

Sounds like we both have lovely dogs from Romania Ladyf

Oh , how I relate to that !
Our two elderly cats were dumped at the local rescue( as not pure breed we think ) half maine coon and half mog about 6 weeks old they thought at the time. No chance of socialising them as the staff simply did not have the time.
They were there a whole year before we adopted them, it was a huge struggle at first but love them to bits even though they will never be the same as those you rear from kittens.

Half Maine Coon and half mog sounds a lovely mixture.

It's taken time, but she will finally be arriving on 19th. How exciting. She will need lots of patience and love, and training. We are ready.

Not in the U.K.,but when we lived in Oman we either rescued or ‘inherited’ from expats who were leaving, a dog, two budgies, two terrapins, and a kitten.

The kitten (there were a lot of semi feral cats around) had been found by young dds in a terrible state - very emaciated and with bleeding paws. We thought she must have been trapped somewhere.

TBH she was in such a bad way - her weight was nothing, like a handful of dead leaves - I didn’t think she’d last the night, but she ate a bit of fish finger (all I had to offer) and was still there in the morning. so I took her to the vet (an Egyptian who looked like Oman Sharif!) who said he’d never seen such an emaciated cat - it’d be better to put her to sleep.

But dds would have been so upset, so instead he gave her a shot of vitamins, IIRC, and she gradually recovered, and became very affectionate, but her forelegs were always stiff. The kids named her Mew.

After 6 months or so we were due to leave Oman - lots of people were leaving - and there was nobody to pass her to - nobody I’d have trusted, anyway.,

Not long before we left she contracted cat flu, so back to the vet, who told me she was also pregnant! He wasn’t sure she’d survive spaying, but it had to be done if we were going to take her back to the U.K.

She survived it well - the vet showed me the two-horned uterus with 4 tiny bumps - I said, ‘No babies for you, Mew,’ - the vet said, El hamdulillah! (Thanks be to Allah!)

We flew her home, she spent 6 months in quarantine, and came out sleek and glossy.
We had her back for just 2 months before she managed to get herself run over on the main road 🙁 - and our house is well away from it. Dds were so distraught.
But as I told them, she’d evidently used up her 9 lives already, and at least we’d given her some extra quality time.

Oh my Witzend. What a story, and what a sad ending, after all you did for her (and I imagine at huge cost too). How sad, and wonderful at the same time. Did you take another cat after that, or decided that you just could not go through this again.

We hope our Minou 3 legs will take to Yata and vive-versa. She is used to cats, but Minou can be a real tease. Fingers crossed. We are planning to go nowhere in next 3 months, apart from short outings. Fingers crossed.

Callistemon21 Mon 06-Feb-23 12:49:45

Oh dear, Witzend, so sad and especially all she had been through and came through with your love and care.

That's the problem with cats, unless they are kept as house cats which seems rather cruel in itself, they do roam. Our family lost two that way both real characters. I'm not a 'cat' person but I was very upset too. 😪

Just got photos of Princesse's last day at the kennels in Djerba. The owner of the kennel's has got her used to being in a cage x2 a day for 1.00 so she won't panic. travelling by car to Tunis with her best mate Charlie, and her owner, both nowPrincesse well, and she feels very comfortable with them. Then will travel by car with them, to arrive with us late Sunday afternoon.

We are ready, diary cleared totally for next few weeks, for lots of patience, walks and cuddles, and training. Wonderful.

Fleurpepper Thu 16-Feb-23 21:06:39

Can't wait <3

Fleurpepper Sun 19-Feb-23 10:13:01

She and her best mate Charlie have just taken off from Tunis.
For Princesse, coming here was her only hope to find a forever home, and I am so so grateful to the friend who found her, and the amazing young lady at the kennel who has been looking after her. They both travelled together to settle the dogs before they were taken over by flight staff.

I am in bits I have to say, and will be until they have landed, and then when she finally arrives here. Minou 3 legs knows something is up- he is waiting too.

Fleurpepper Mon 20-Feb-23 07:54:21

All good- she was a tad nervous last night on arrival, but 'took to us' straight away- poached chicken helping. Walked around the garden several times, and then settled on her bed with lots of cuddles. Got up VERY early today to make sure she was OK- big welcome, more pellets and poached chicken and around the garden, cuddles, and chats. Expected to find a mess or a puddle, and possibly some chewing ... but no, as good as gold.

She will be totally fine. Not possible to find good homes for dogs in Djerba- lots and lots of stray dogs - as said, being shot and stoned in the streets. One long, stressful day, with her two best friends, 1 human, 1 dog- and a lifetime of happiness ahead of her. And lots of joy for us. Win, win.

glammanana Mon 20-Feb-23 09:09:49

Fleurpepper How wonderful that she has settled so well she is a very lucky dog to have found you.
This week-end I have adopted a wonderful bulldog from the Charity I support, she & her sister where used as breeding machines by their owner and handed over as the owner had no more use for them she is the most placid dog ever and has found her forever home with me.No more lonely days anymore for me or her we are best friends.

Fleurpepper Tue 21-Feb-23 13:19:18

Wonderful glammanana smile

she is settling so well, but is a bit nervous of OH as men in her life have been so cruel. He has taken over feeding (rice, pellets and poached chicken, and treats). She is getting ther message that some men can be wonderful friends.

She will need training for recall. Never had to have help with any other rescue before, but I think this time it will be required. Letting her settle for a couple of weeks first.

Fleurpepper Sun 26-Feb-23 17:55:34

It's really VERY cold here and blowing a freezing east wind that could cut you in half and grass is frozen. She is being so good, despite the huge surprise- she has probably NEVER experienced cold like this. She let me put a coat on her, not the one that goes over the head, but a double fleece one that goes over back and held with velcro around neck and middle. Bless her.

Fleurpepper Thu 23-Mar-23 19:35:47

1 month now and she is so much more relaxed and not so scared of OH-. Sadly her experiences with men have been very bad in the past. Off lead and running free in our large garden now- but with tracker, just in case. Walks in the countryside still on lead for now. She and Minou 3 legs are getting on amazingly well, hurrah.

Fleurpepper Sun 09-Apr-23 18:52:23

7 weeks approx now and every day in every way ...'. No more collar or tracker in garden, and she now happily jumps in and out of my car to go for great wood walks. We had to drag her before and carry her in. So big progress. She and Minou are great pals, and that is lovely to see. 7 weeks until we go for our long drive to Tuscany - so have to slowly increase car ride distance. She has truly got the message that DH is one of the good guys, and as he has taken on feeding, gets very excited to see him in morning. Onwards and forwards. So so rewarding.

I'm an inveterate "rescuer". Horses, ponies, cats, dogs - the lot.
In truth, they have rescued me.
My beloved, if autocratic cat has just been pts. He had a rapidly-developing stomach tumour, became worse overnight and was pts the next day.
My next furry dictator should arrive next week.

All my cats have been rescues. My latest was found by an alert bin man after some heartless person put him in a black bin and he was tipped into the bin lorry. He was filthy, half starved and terrified. It took 6 months before he relaxed enough to sit beside me. Even now, three years on, he appears, no matter where he has been, when he hears the bin lorry and jumps onto my lap. And he stays away from other humans too - not a bad thing. He’s a happy happy boy now, confident outside and notorious for sneaking into the village artisan pie shop and trying to steal a pie. He has brought home a pastie, whole and still warm, a half eaten sausage roll, a fresh pack of prawn sandwiches, a lettuce, a chicken wing, a pork chop, a warm chip and an assortment of live rodents. He clearly thinks I need feeding because he never attempts to eat any of this but just deposits things at my feet. I adore him.

So sorry to hear- but I am sure you know, as a top rescuer- that knowing when the time is, to let go, for their sake - is the best love you can give.

Tell us about last and next.

Animals just find me ... how they know, I don't know. But yes, it is a two way thing. Since Yata has arrived, I am fitter, happier, sleep better, have lost half a stone and down... and she has finally got it, that our love if forever- and we will never let her down.

Fleurpepper Thu 20-Jul-23 21:57:12

5 months now, and she is doing so so well. She adores OH, despite being terrified of men previously. She is so well behaved and the next big step will be walking her in the woods off the lead.

We will have 2 cars ready, her Tracker on and 2 phones, 2 cars all ready and have studied the local geography very carefully to ensure we can anticipate, just in case.

She has been so good for me too- it truly goes both ways smile- feel fitter now than I have for years, and lost 10 kilos. Rescue so often goes both ways- and that is wonderful.
