Has anyone got a basic washing machine they could recommend please.

Mel1967 Sun 17-Mar-24 21:45:06

I’ve been there and not worth the money.
We have the Samsung machine, with the sock drawer.
The best

I have the Hoover H wash, and am very happy with it.
I shopped and shopped around, and ended up paying less than £300 for it smile
I think it's a smart machine and can be used with an app, but I don't do any of that.

I have a mid-range Hoover model that, touch wood, has been running like clockwork for ten years - so was lucky this time. Still, I often soak washing overnight, then just run it through the rinses with an EcoEgg.

I always buy a basic model - I only ever use a couple of programmes anyway. The one I have now is from John Lewis, it's well over 10 years old and to date has never gone wrong. But now I've said it ......... !

Siemens mid range £500 ish but with a great guarantee.

I have a LG mid range washing machine bought new last summer. I can recommend it.

I don't use the app either - can't fathom why anyone would!

AO Appliances - Deals - Clearance

They currently have half a dozen washing machines at £250 or cheaper, including Bosch and Indesit, and even more under £300.

DD and I have bought appliances from them in the last year. She bought a Samsung washing machine and I bought a Samsung dishwasher at considerably reduced prices.

All my white goods have been one of the cheapest on the market, and have lasted nearly 25 years - Indesit - probably more luck than judgement.

MissAdventure Sun 17-Mar-24 23:00:50

AO have a "store" on ebay, where you can buy graded white goods.
I bought my little tumble dryer from them, as it may not have been in it's original packing. (It was, actually)

I rarely use more than two or three programmes on my washing machine so it was a waste of money spending more on one with multiple programmes.

I'd look at Which and comparison sites first.

Having a shortish (eg 30-40minute) programme is a good idea. The shortest on mine is 15 minutes (ok for a freshen up) but the next is over an hour.

Sago

Siemens mid range £500 ish but with a great guarantee.

Yes, mine's a Siemens

My white goods are all either Beko or Indesit. Cheap models and are excellent.

Mine is John Lewis own brand. Very good. Has 14 min wash ,extra 10 mins spin. Use both regularly. I use programmes with shorter running times to save electricity eg instead of 2 hr ones use 1 hour or 30 mins. The 14 mini wash perfect for tights and delicates and hand wash only items. Once a month use Dettol washing machine cleaner but at 40° not 60° as the bottle says and on a setting that takes 1 hour.

Should be some Easter deals appear soon . Some companies take away old machines for free and either free or small cost for hooking up. Take this into account when pricing the machine you want.

Samsung for us probably 10yrs old, never misses a beat, washes really well even on quick wash setting.

Harris27 Mon 18-Mar-24 07:53:08

I indeset has lasted and a candy washing machine lasted me and my friend years would buy both again.

Pantglas2 Mon 18-Mar-24 08:07:16

I’m another Samsung owner, purchased in 2009 in their 50year anniversary sale for £169 (should have been £250) so doing really well!

3 washes a week - hot for white bedding, tea towels and dishcloths and 2 shorter, cooler programmes…dark colours and light colours.

J52 Mon 18-Mar-24 08:11:46

When buying a washing machine I used to find one that had the programmes I wanted, then divide the cost by the assumed life of the machine. Such as a £400 machine was £80 per year for five years, a£350 one £70 and so on. Anything after 10 years was a bonus. Several makes are from the same manufacturer.
Our new house had a built in washing machine, AEG, left by the previous owner. Needless to say it broke after we moved in. We went to John Lewis for the replacement because we knew they could fit it. It’s a Bosch.

Siemens for me. 59 minutes for nighties and tops and 1 hour and 15 minutes for bedding, towels, and trousers. There is an economy programme on it but it is over 3 hours.

I would buy it again.

Freya5 Mon 18-Mar-24 08:24:14

Cheap, over expensive, limited budget. For me always been Indesit, washer dryer, moved a couple of times, lasted 12 years, now another Indesit, basic model, very good, very quite, Eco and quick wash settings. In use hopefully another 12 years.

I’ve always had Hotpoint washing machines since the 1970s, the current one is 14 years old and still working perfectly

M0nica Mon 18-Mar-24 08:49:22

I have had one Hotpoint washing machine - and would never have another. The drum disintegrated mid cycle and ruined over £100 of clothes.

MissAdventure Mon 18-Mar-24 09:02:19

I had a hotpoint for around 25 years.
In the end, it was a bit like Trigger's broom!
It was secondhand when I got it too.

Visgir1 Mon 18-Mar-24 09:26:50

I have a Siemens too. Recently I couldn't open the filter to give it a clean, tbh I haven't checked it for ages. It was stuck, so I contacted a Washing machine engineer to say could he help.. He did it was a metal collar stiffner from OD shirt had jammed it.
He was telling me how much easier this type of machine is to work on, just by the processes of design they hardly go wrong and worth every penny, he tells folk don't bother with cheaper ones.
