Trying to sign in to my Gmail account without success

For sometime I have tried to access an account I must once have used but have been locked out.
Messages from Google come to tell me that a new code has been sent to an email address which I don't use and don't know how to access.
Is it time for me to go a specialist phone shop to try to unravel the problem?

Being unable to speak to an actual human drives me to insanity.

The messages from GGL should not be going to your gmail address. Do you have another email address that you haven't used for a while?

Usually there is an option to change password/username.

But perhaps I have misunderstood.

Have you tried this Grammaretto,
If your account is disabled, you can ask Google to restore your access. To get started, head to myaccount.google.com and enter your Gmail address. Tip: If you can't get in to your account, you may be able to download and save account data from some Google Services.
Good luck with it.

Thanks Baggs. There are options to change password etc but it doesn't help. I just have new passwords to remember but am still locked out. I can't even explain it properly.

You need a "keychain", or equivalent that stores your passwords.

I only know the passwords that unlock my phone and my laptop. Then face recognition and fingerprint do the rest.

If I need to see a password I sign into my iCloud. Android will have something similar.
