Excel 10 protecting using a password, now not working

I have been using excel for years without any problems. For some reason this week the file didn't ask me for a password to open the workbook.
I have tried starting a new workbook and protecting it adding a password saving and closing.
When I open it doesn't ask me for a password.
Anyone have any ideas

I may be teaching you to suck eggs, but what format are you trying to save it in?

MS Office does not allow for password protection of documents saved as Open Document Format files.
So if it's a powerpoint save it as .pptx or similar, if it's word save as .docx or similar. Excel files should have an xlsx extension, or perhaps try saving the document as an earlier version of Excel?

I have used .xlsx file extension.

The workbook as been opening fine for months it only started not asking for the password this week.
I have had some error messages coming up though, I guess regarding the formula( sum, subtract, etc)
Even if the formulas were incorrect surely that shouldn't prevent the protection of the document.
I am not techy at all and find this all very confusing.
