Sorry everyone but this is an itch I need to scratch, though I may have done it before.
How is it that people who would never mis-spell finite or infinite manage so frequently to mis-spell definite. That's right, I said definite, without an 'a'.

And I, pedant though I may be, managed to miss out a question mark in that post, despite reviewing it. Mea culpa.

Independent is another one, often misspelled, that is without an a.

It's the curse of Pedants' Corner...!

Ana Wed 30-Jan-13 20:04:20

That was to anno, of course.

Ana I could be the Curse of Pedants' Corner, if you like. smile

Ana Wed 30-Jan-13 20:15:39

Oh no, I never even though of that! confused grin

Ana Wed 30-Jan-13 20:16:20

thought - the curse strikes again!

glassortwo Wed 30-Jan-13 20:19:41

grin sorry but life is too short grin <ducks behind the chair>

Ella46 Wed 30-Jan-13 20:25:47

Is this going to be like the 'loose' and 'lose' thread? hmm

annodomini Wed 30-Jan-13 20:28:03

No - that wasn't in Pedants' Corner. I deliberately posted it here so that non-pedants didn't have to read it, though, of course, they probably will.hmm

gracesmum Wed 30-Jan-13 20:29:06

or the "effect"/"affect" confusion?
(*glass*, why do you keep ducks behind your chair?) grin

Anne58 Wed 30-Jan-13 20:29:46

Ooooh anno ! The times I've had to metaphorically bite my lip over "definately" grin

My other "itch" as you put it in the opening post is "of" when it should be "have". I have even come across this in novels, makes you wonder who does the proof reading.

glass come out at once! I think we are allowed our little peccadilloes from time to time. (bet I've bloody spelled that wrong!)

glassortwo Wed 30-Jan-13 20:30:07

Keeps the crumbs down grin

glassortwo Wed 30-Jan-13 20:31:55

phoenix all my sins are little ones grin

annodomini Wed 30-Jan-13 20:46:39

I seem to have made at least two of you itchy! BTW - glass, it's the most common mis-spelling I came across when teaching mature students and always told them to think of 'finite'.

glassortwo Wed 30-Jan-13 20:48:26

I am a lost case anno grin

Notsogrand Wed 30-Jan-13 21:18:10

Was it Mark Twain who said.....?

Anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination

Just saying grin
