My beautiful cystus looks well and truly dead still. Should I wait a bit longer for signs of life before giving up on it?

I think they are relatively short lived. I’ve had two different varieties die after 5 to 10 years.

I had 2 beauties which just suddenly died.

I have a cystus that looks very healthy this morning must be very old cos it looked the same ten years ago think wet winter the problem. The roots are a couple of foot above Last year’s flowers

Jealous moi?!

I think I will just have to replace it.

Esmay Thu 21-Mar-24 09:55:24

I love Cystus and I have found that they die off with no warning at all .
If I replace them -I might do some cuttings and keep them in pots -though I have far too many pots to look after .
But cuttings are
fun to do anyway !

Could be all the rain we’ve had that’s killed it off. I don’t think it will grow back.

We've had two and both have died after a few years ☹

Try cutting back a small branch and see if there's any green signs of life.

I think that Cystus is relatively short lived and it isn't necessarily the rain .
I was upset when mine died after being so beautiful - it was a few years ago before our winters became so cold and summers so hot .

Yours looks as if it's well-drained there, Gwyllt

We've grown them in two or three different locations but the same thing happens.

Gwyllt Thu 21-Mar-24 10:14:57

Calli it’s as dry as a bone most of the time and any soil is water repellent
Roots must be really deep
Would love to know how old it is

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Mar-24 10:36:00

Perhaps that's the answer, Gwyllt

Mine is in a large raised bed that goes down the length of the garden fence. Maybe it is too wet, although the earth in it feeds into the ground below. It has dons really well there for 3 years.
Maybe I need to consider something else ... although I do love cystus.

Just looked up growing conditions
We are coastal it is sheltered and sunny
Has anyone else got a long lived cystus

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Mar-24 10:53:53

Just remembered we had a third one at the front years ago. That died too.
