A friend has sent me this photo of this invading plant in her garden.
I thought it was Ivy, OH says not.
Any ideas.

Looks like bindweed.

AskAlice Thu 28-Sep-23 18:29:26

Oh no, it's the dreaded bindweed!!

NfkDumpling Thu 28-Sep-23 18:29:59

My identify that plant app says its either wild morning glory or honey vine.

Namsnanny Thu 28-Sep-23 18:51:22

Yes Bindweed. My garden is full of it. We've been battling it, and loosing for a while.

Bindweed has really brittle roots and each tiny piece left in the ground is capable of growing a new plant so getting it out is a laborious job and takes several goes.

On the up side it does have beautiful white flowers. If it's not growing over another plant I leave it where it is in my garden and enjoy the free show, then cut it down and dig it out in the autumn.

Bindweed in my opinion

my plant identifier says wild morning glory too nfkdumplin but only 14% so wrong I think

Thank you everyone. It’s the dreaded bindweed.
She’s not a Gardner so it looks as if I’m going to get my loppers out.

BlueBelle Thu 28-Sep-23 19:12:17

No don’t lop it you need to pull it out ….and fully

J52 Thu 28-Sep-23 19:32:48

Keep pulling it out, eventually it weakens. Also it likes growing vertically so pea sticks in the ground where it grows encourages vertical growth when it is about 30 cms/ a foot it can be pulled out successfully. Repeated action weakens it considerably.

Lidy I do the same. I enjoy the beautiful white flowers which insects love. I just keep it in control by pulling some of it up. But it is a free show.

Try wrapping it round a cane and loosening the soil at the base.
You could pull it out more easily but yes, it leaves behind bits of roots which grow into another plant

I've seen a friend wrap a polythene bag round it then spray weed killer into the bag so the weedkiller doesn't touch anything else.
Weedkiller is not good to use generally, but sometimes needs must.

It strangles everything if left to its own devices.

Ps I should have looked at the photo first! 😁

That's ivy!

DH agrees, we've pulled enough out of our garden.

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Sep-23 20:00:26

I can't post the pictures.
Try again.

Bindweed

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Sep-23 20:05:11

Common ivy

Callistemon21 Thu 28-Sep-23 23:12:44

Ivy leaves will be thicker, larger and often shiny, unlike bindweed leaves.

25Avalon Fri 29-Sep-23 14:22:57

Callistemon look at the leaves - they are different. The leaves in the op photo are heart shaped where they join the stem. Those in your photo are rounded where they go into the stem. The photo is of bindweed aka the enemy as several have said.

Callistemon21 Fri 29-Sep-23 15:38:49

Ivy leaves are not all the same shape.

The best way is to feel the leaves.

Patsy70 Fri 29-Sep-23 16:17:29

I have both bindweed and ivy!

Patsy70 Fri 29-Sep-23 16:17:57

Ivy!

Yes, I'd go and take photos for comparison but ......

Hi everyone.
I asked my friend if it had ever flowered, no.
Now I have another pic and lo and behold there is a white flower, at the top, right of centre in the pic.

Callistemon21 Fri 29-Sep-23 17:33:06

If that is convolvulus she has got a problem! 😲 and I stand corrected.
The only place I've seen it like that is in the countryside!

Don't chop, spray.
I'm not an advocate of sprays but sometimes needs must.

Hi Cali
That’s the little bugger, isn’t it. Thanks to you all for info.

Well, it was so thick and prolific and the leaves looked shiny that i did think it was ivy.
But the flower looks like convolvulus.
Ivy flowers are usually in clusters.
