Can anyone tell me wht they are called HOT cross buns? I always eat mine cold!

Elegran Thu 10-Apr-14 14:51:16

Maybe they were sold in the streets by vendors shouting "Hot cross buns". Like the "caller herrin' " of the song - Caller meant fresh.

Found this Galen, which also has a recipe for them.

I remember a kids' rhyme in my childhood (60 years ago) - "Hot cross buns, hot cross buns, one-a-penny, two-a-penny, hot cross buns, buy some for your master, buy some for your dame, hot cross buns" ... then memory fades, but I do remember the baker sold them still warm. They seemed bigger in those days, but quite light with currants and no spice. I prefer the modern ones, heavier and very spicy, which I find go down very well cold and buttered, with a nice cup to tea.

I recall that rhyme going "If you have no daughters give them to your sons". Strange!
I assumed hot cross buns are hot because you toast them. That's how I like them, with butter.

I like mine warm with lashings of butter!
I never eat them before Good Friday !

I remember when we only bought hot cross buns on Good Friday, and then we had to rush to the bakers (no one else sold them) and queue, if you were too late - no hot cross buns! But then of course Christmas didn't start until well into November.

Split, toasted and buttered. YUM YUM !
