I call them "Baked" potatoes but a friend calls them "Jacket" potatoes and further insists that referring to them as "baked" is a sign of being "common". Really?
Give me strength!
She IS a bit of a Hyacinth......

I'm common too!

Aldom Tue 23-Jan-24 11:18:45

BBC Good Food has a recipe for BAKED potatoes. So I would say it's perfectly correct to use the word, baked. Nothing 'common' about it. smile

Pammie1 Tue 23-Jan-24 11:18:59

Me too !!

MissInterpreted Tue 23-Jan-24 11:19:56

Plenty of 'baked' potato shops around who would disagree that they're common, I'm sure! grin

What a strange thing to feel superior about. We always called them lid potatoes after coming across this term in a Milly Molly Mandy book. I wonder what label that gives us?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 11:28:24

I’m common too. I had baked potatoes yesterday.

Callistemon21 Tue 23-Jan-24 11:32:32

I always dress mine in jackets

Description of baked potato is what it actually is. I have yet to see a potato dressed in a jacket but the mind can easily boggle at this. Picturing mine in velvet with gold buttons.

I don't think your friend is a pedant, mae13, she's just a snob!

We're talking about potatoes cooked in an oven with their skins on. Who cares what they're called?

Bella23 Tue 23-Jan-24 11:48:10

I'm common as well we had baked potatoes yesterday They are called baking potatoes on the bag not jacketing potatoes.

Knitandnatter Tue 23-Jan-24 11:51:01

Oooh! Love a baked spud! I had one just last weekend with loads of grated cheese, coleslaw and butter! Does that make me common?? I really don't give two hoots and after I had eaten the fillings I ate the skins..........there wasn't a jacket, anorak, overcoat or blazer in sight smile

Seriously, mae13, your friend is nothing but a snob, she must be a very sad individual to berate you for calling them BAKED!!

I always dress mine in jackets

A dinner jacket, of course! grin

welbeck Tue 23-Jan-24 11:56:51

when i was young, potatoes used to be boiled in their skins, and put on the table, or taken from the saucepan by each eater, with a fork, and then deftly peeled with the knife.
these were called potatoes in their jackets.

I always do three more potatoes when having baked. They go in with the leeks to make soup the next day. Makes a big difference: in a good way!

😂 I had a baked potato last night but didn't bother putting it's jacket on.

Grannynannywanny Tue 23-Jan-24 12:04:41

mae13 I suspect your friend has a chip on her shoulder.

MeowWow Tue 23-Jan-24 12:05:20

My husband and I call them baked potatoes. Always have done.

Rosie51 Tue 23-Jan-24 12:11:23

I tend to say jacket potato or potatoes in their jackets more than baked but always thought that's because I'm common, baked potato sounds posher to me.

Spuddy Tue 23-Jan-24 12:15:39

Definitely jacket to me .... with butter cheese and tuna!

merlotgran Tue 23-Jan-24 12:17:42

I always thought it was the other way round and that Jacket potatoes is just a quick way of saying, ‘Potatoes, baked in their jackets.’

I knew a restaurant owner who told her staff that a Jacket potato was an American vulgarism and as she was known for only serving traditional English cuisine, only the word Baked should ever appear on the menu when referring to potatoes cooked in the oven!

Personally, I thought she was a bit half baked herself but there you go. 😂

I call them baked jacket potatoes😂😂 love them with lagging’s of butter and grated cheddar cheese.

25Avalon Tue 23-Jan-24 12:49:50

Lashings not laggings - is that even a word?

welbeck Tue 23-Jan-24 12:50:15

is the lagging to keep the heat in,
ie insulation.

Visgir1 Tue 23-Jan-24 12:53:21

Well never ever given this a thought.
