We have been asked by the team at BMI Healthcare to find out how breast cancer aware you are. This survey is open to all UK Mumsnetters or Gransnetters.

Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a prize draw where two winners will each win a £150 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list). All data is confidential.

Here's the link: www.surveymonkey.com/r/GNBMI

Thanks so much and good luck with the prize draw.

Done and I knew more than I thought!

Why should we be "breast cancer aware"? Are we supposed to live our lives worrying about illness all the time? I am not doing the survey.

janeainsworth Wed 30-Sep-15 18:22:38

You are not the only one who is sceptical Jingl
According to this article, although more breast cancers are found by women themselves than by mammography, and 'breast awareness' is better than self-examination, the article concludes:

'As the authors of a paper in the European Journal of Cancer wrote, breast cancer support organisations should recognise their responsibilities. "Intense promotional activity such as breast cancer awareness month every October results in dismayed clinicians finding their clinics overcrowded with the worried well to the detriment of patients with breast cancer." '

Completed.

I'd like to know the answer to the question about how often people are diagnosed with breast cancer - every 10 minutes, hour, day....

I lost a sister to breast cancer just this month, a sister who incidentally was a nurse, but who didn't take up the offer of mammograms. By the time she discovered the lump, it had spread to her lung, liver and throat. She died about 8 weeks after the initial diagnosis.

Hello Ana and Janea
Sorry, we know it wasn't intentional, but we're going to have to delete those posts. The idea of the survey is to find out how aware people are (without thread pointers! grin). Thanks for taking time to take part though.
Answering your question, would it be useful if after the survey we did a page at some point with the information?

janeainsworth Thu 01-Oct-15 12:00:54

Yes please Lara. [smile

MiniMouse Thu 01-Oct-15 12:16:05

Yes, please post the answers!

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 01-Oct-15 12:17:04

Great - we'll talk to BMI and see what we can do smile

Judthepud2 Thu 01-Oct-15 21:16:02

Survey done.

Re your cynical comment Jingl about breast awareness, if I hadn't checked myself and acted on what I found immediately I would probably not be here today. I found the lump between the regular mammograms! It had doubled in size in the week between showing up on the mammogram/scan and the surgery!

nessa38ish Fri 02-Oct-15 13:04:00

finished survey, has made me think about checking and will be asking about a mammogram at the gps. i'm 49 and not been offered one yet.

AnnGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 05-Oct-15 14:23:59

Thanks to those who took the survey: now closed.

The winners are nanval from GN and UpOnDown from MN

I will try and get the answers posted here this week
