Pedants' corner

Rein/ Reign

I've lost count recently of the number of times I've seen ' free reign ' written in the press and other places.
Free rein - freedom of action or expression
Reign - rule as a monarch
It's annoying for a pedant but not so much for others I know before I get shouted at.

Perhaps people would remember which is which if they connected "free rein" with the rein that keeps a horse doing what the rider wants it to? If it is on free rein, the horse can do as it likes.

The other word, "reign" has a G in it. G for "govern" ? The monarch reigns/governs - at least they used to, before power shifted to Parliament.

I hate this kind of thing too. Mixing up there and their drives me mad but my pet hate is was and were . Think singular ad plural

Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman are hosting the Pride of Britain Awards on TV tonight.
In the trailer, Ashley says ‘join Carol and I’…. It may be he wrote that himself, in which case he should’ve been told it’s Carol and me. Surely, a script writer should have known better though, if professionally written?

At school Georgesgran we were taught to break the phrase down, in this case you would say “join Carol” and “join me”.
“Join I” just sounds so wrong.
Do you think they don’t teach that any more?

Good way of remembering Elegran

Still, it is a bit of light relief.

I`ve lost count of the number of caravans seen for sale as having so many "births", rather than "berths".

At least it wasn't 'Carol and myself' ?

I don't like rein and reign being confused but I suppose it's because people aren't familiar with horsey terms these days. Free rein has become a specialised dressage term these days which means, roughly, take the pressure off the bit and let the horse stretch its neck down. It doesn't mean the horse can do what it likes, though. Rider is still in control...

Bodach Thu 27-Oct-22 23:15:35

And don't get me going on "would/could of", instead of "would/could have". To say nothing of the abominations that are "thankyou" and "summiting/medalling' etc etc

Rein and rein- joined by the parent who asked if the children had free rain to choose what to do at after school club.

Not to mention the people who ask "can I lend £20" when they mean "can I borrow?"

My response would be to ask them who they propose to "lend" the money to! Causes endless confusion.

Rent vs Let is my bugbear ? ?

I bet rein and reign (and regent and royal) both come from the same Sanscrit word.

See what I mean about rein and reign both being to do with controlling? Maizie could have been using the dressage technique as a metaphor for liberal politics.

That set me off on a happy half hour with on-line etymologies.?

It looks as though you're on the right lines with its origins.

You'll have to bare with me on this one grin

I'm one who often gets my words muddled up, and the same with spelling I started the border/boarder laugh everyone had at my expense last year.
When it irritates just remember that the people who make the mistakes aren't doing it on purpose and could have an underlying problem Dyslexia in my case.
It runs in my family some of my GC has it, though DH can tell you all the Latin and Greek routes.
My family inherited from a very famous English poet who most of you could quote some of his poetry and actually had to have everything proofread before publishing.
The people who irritate with their spelling or Grammar might be irritated and pedantic about your lack of understanding of maths or physics. How many could explain Einstein's theory?

Yammy Fri 28-Oct-22 11:51:00

Thank you to whoever kindly put the video beside my post"Coping with Dyslexia', unfortunately, I can not open it and after 70 + years of trying to cope I don't think a gransnet video is going to do much difference.

A new one this morning. He peaked his friend by discussing trans issues. Piqued? Peeked? Peaked?

'Loose' instead of 'lose'...

Dyslexia - now there's a cruel joke.... Fancy spelling it like that! 😎
DD is, though she's not let her hold her back - once she got out of school anyway. (The English teacher said there was "No such thing")

At university she used Dragon software & her dissertation truly made me cry - the first substantial piece of work I'd ever seen from her.
However, we've all learned to live with it & probably become more tollerant, understanding people because of her.

We've had some hilarious moments too -
Like the time she was having her 2nd endoscopy & texted me " *what do I wash my bowls with? "
Me: "Fairy?"
DD meant the medication for bowels! 😂
