Well done!
Channel 5 news has just referred to the Quern’s “private internment” (sic) on Monday.
Makes me wonder what they think the internment camps in N Ireland were all about.
Oh dear, red faces all round.

Jeremy Vine was saying ma’am rhyming with harm rather than ham on Channel 5 this morning.

grandMattie Thu 15-Sep-22 17:32:00

Very common error.
I was at a talk the other day where the speaker told us that smugglers were brining in contraband brandy in “industrious” quantities! It conjured a wonderful picture…

Calendargirl Thu 15-Sep-22 17:43:59

‘brining in contraband brandy’ in whatever sorts of quantities sounds rather extravagant.

BlueBelle Thu 15-Sep-22 17:45:28

Oh who cares ??

Really?
TV broadcasters talking about “imprisoning” the late Queen?
Hello?

MawtheMerrier Thu 15-Sep-22 18:35:35

Don’t you think so-called professionals should at least be able to do their job competently?

Fleurpepper Thu 15-Sep-22 18:36:38

Oh come on. They have been talking live almost non-stop, often making it up as they go along to 'fill the gaps'. Easy to avoid those mistakes with a prepared script, but these are exceptional circumstances.

And in many ways, it is exactly what it is, no?

Fleurpepper Thu 15-Sep-22 18:39:09

However, did you hear correctly?

'Interment is the placing of a corpse in a grave. If a loved one dies, you need to make arrangements for the interment so that people can bid the deceased farewell. Interment comes from root words meaning "to place inside," and in this case it's the placing of someone inside the earth, for burial.'

MawtheMerrier Thu 15-Sep-22 18:49:48

It was also written as a headline on the screen.

tickingbird Thu 15-Sep-22 18:54:25

Someone referred to the Armstrong Jones nephew of the Queen as Queen Margaret’s son!! This was a professional commentator but can’t remember which one - think it was Sky.

Hello?

I suspect Galaxy may have been referring to your typo.

Hello?

I suspect Galaxy may have been referring to your typo.

Which particular typo is that?

MawtheMerrier Thu 15-Sep-22 18:57:59

Oops - Queen!
But I don’t profess to be a professional

Fleurpepper Thu 15-Sep-22 19:01:18

Internment instead of 'interment'

so probably someone's typo rather than mistake in speech.

LauraNorderr Thu 15-Sep-22 19:04:57

The quern’s internment, brining in brandy.
Sounds like an episode of Allo Allo

Vintagenonna Thu 15-Sep-22 19:07:27

I swear blind I heard someone refer to the forthcoming event being the greatest moment since the late Queen was 'coronated'.

Hate to bang on but they said it then it appeared on the screen as a sort of headline - so written as well.

I have seen/heard “coronated” and also that the King’s accession was “proclamated “

Yes, which is why I clearly said it was probably a typo - but not a speech mistake.

Oh I despair - spoken by the journalist first then written
