Yet again I’ve just heard this pronounced ‘nucular’ - by a tv reporter. Why is it that so many seem incapable of pronouncing the word correctly?

Lexisgranny Sun 21-Aug-22 09:30:42

Couldn’t agree more GSM. My pet hate is artitect instead of architect, which seems prevalent on the current crop of house makeover programmes.

Then there’s secertary and athaletics

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 21-Aug-22 09:36:31

Yes, that’s another. As you can see this was not a good start to my day!

Grannybags Sun 21-Aug-22 10:04:57

And the footblers

Sparklefizz Sun 21-Aug-22 10:07:08

... and pacific instead of specific.

Blossoming Sun 21-Aug-22 10:32:19

Don’t all Americans pronounce the word ‘nuclear’ as ‘nucular’? I shall have to Google it now.

Artic and arctic - as well as nucular!

Because they are lazy ?

The nuclear and specific mispronounced words irritate me as well. The other one is Febuary- it's FebRuary grrrr

Fleurpepper Sun 21-Aug-22 17:20:28

Nuclear worries me a lot more than how it is pronounced, tbh.

George W Bush pronounced it like that.

Americans seem to say Aloo-min-um and not Aluminium - are both correct?

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 21-Aug-22 17:47:35

They might be correct (or should I say 'accepted') in the US, but not here. Americans seem never to have got to grips with the way 'aluminium' is spelled. How they square the spelling with their pronunciation is beyond my limited understanding.

Here, interesting!

Febuary gets me shouting at the radio too. Also libary instead of library. Quite agree about nucular.

Purpledaffodil Sun 21-Aug-22 18:50:54

AND prostrate cancer instead of prostate cancer. I can’t take that lying down ?

Sparklefizz Sun 21-Aug-22 19:10:05

.... also mischiev-ee-ous instead of mischievous. There is no "i" after the "v". Grrr.

absent Sun 21-Aug-22 19:59:34

I think aluminum was the original name given to the metal by Humphrey Davy, but he later referred to it as aluminium. The former became the official USA spelling and pronunciation while "English English" speakers use aluminium.

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 21-Aug-22 20:02:20

Heeneous instead of heinous too.

crazyH Sun 21-Aug-22 20:42:55

‘Mischiev-ee-ous’ is the one that really grinds. Almost everyone I know, gets it wrong. ?

sodapop Sun 21-Aug-22 20:45:47

George Bush used to pronounce terrorists as tourists which was always slightly alarming!

merlotgran Sun 21-Aug-22 21:21:14

Fuge because they can’t say Huge.
