Vicious circle or cycle?

Just what it says on the title, above. I hear both 'circle' and 'cycle' used to describe the same vicious thing - but which is correct?

Vicious 'circle' pips 'cycle' by a century. Similarly, 'another think coming' came before 'another thing coming', but the misapprehension happened within a few years (in the late 19th century).

Susie Dent knows about this kind of thing.

I would say both are correct, a vicious circle would be never-ending but a cycle would be events that end but can flare up again.

I use both, I have discovered but I don’t think it is a conscious decision.

Circle and bat. I think "off his own bat" comes from cricket.

Yes, it is. www.sunderlandecho.com/news/off-your-own-back-and-four-other-common-english-phrases-you-may-be-using-incorrectly-404542
