My wife has pet names for the whole family. Is this common amongst Grandmas?

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 08:56:08

My daughter is my oldest kid but her real name is used more often. My youngest son hates his but even though I tell her not to she forgets.I don't want to upset her cause she seems to get comfort I suppose in these pet names.Im 54 and my wife is 51.

What are these names then?
I assumed this thread was about the names of cats and dogs!

This made me laugh, we have ‘pet’ names for some relations but they don’t know!! Ones that spring to mind are ‘Frosty Knickers’ and ‘Freeloader’ you can work out why!

Shelflife Sat 18-Dec-21 09:44:04

I also assumed this was about our furry friends!

I come from Yorkshire, no longer there. A pet name for people we love is ‘ chicken’ goodness knows why ? When either of our two small GC arrive I greet them with “ Hello chicken” It causes them great amusement !

I also thought it was about our four legged friends such as,Rosey/Emily/Shambles/Poppy/& Oliver the Great.

Grandpajo you’ve also mentioned this on a thread about Jokes.
You seem to have a bee in your bonnet about it

"The gannets" always created a titter come Christmas. Sadly one " gannet " died and the remaining one has slowed down with age.

Ok here goes, risking anonymity but hey ho.
Dina,Doo doo,Jimmy..his names not Jimmy.Granddaughter.....Poo poo head.

FannyCornforth Sat 18-Dec-21 09:59:33

Ah, I see, thank you. So your wife refers to you as Grandpajo in relation to your adult children.
Yes, I can understand why you want to be ‘Dad’.
They are special names between special people, if that makes sense

FannyCornforth Sat 18-Dec-21 10:00:27

Just read your last post. That’s not great either.

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:22:58

It's sort of half and half.Being 50's it's confusing as to whether I want to be a Dad or a Grandpa...if you get what I mean.

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:24:59

I love being a Grandpa obviously. But I don't like being called Granpajo when it's just the wife and kids around

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 10:33:21

When my Grandaughter comes in she shouts her pet name(Nanny.......
) really loud.I know this sounds silly but my grandauter starting to say that's not her name, her own name if you see what I mean.Poo poo head...I wish she could have come up with something else.I dunno probably doesn't matter in the scheme of things

We've got nicknames for the neighbors -
Father Ted and his wife Rusty
Keyhole Kate
Big Tache Slipper Man
Honey Monster and Mr Muscle
Internet King
Olive (On the Buses)
Roman helmet

I dread to think what people might call us (but we don't really care)

So funny these.grin.Why Keyhole Kate and Roman Helmet?

HowVeryDareYou Sat 18-Dec-21 14:32:31

Roman Helmet - because her hair is that shape (in 30 years, it's never been a different style or colour) and is absolutely plastered to her head with gel.

Keyhole Kate - she looks like her, very thin and wiry, but also a gossip.

I love some pet names.
In our family we have Bubs or Bubbles.
Loddle
Ratty Lou
I am often referred to as Nana Sing song or Nana Yumyum.
Always using Poppet, Sweetie, my darling, Pickle and others when addressing Grandchildren.

ginny Sat 18-Dec-21 15:40:33

Should have said I wouldn’t want to be called Nana by my own children or Husband , other than when they are talking to the Grandchildren.

Grandpajo Sat 18-Dec-21 15:47:19
