Too much icing on cake, especially cup cakes!

I am a spoil sport or does anyone else think that the trend to put too much frosting on cakes is simply wrong? I want to taste the cake and not be overwhelmed by pretty, often discarded frosting. It seems that excessive frosting is for the esoteric benefit of the cake decorator.

I completely agree; I bought some beautifully decorated cupcakes locally but at least 50% was the frosting, the amount of which would have been really sickly to eat.

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 13:05:29

I don't eat anything like that.
Just too much everything in, and on, cakes nowadays.

Totally with you on this one. I don't buy cupcakes for that very reason.
That said, a proper walnut cake deserves a goodly covering of coffee butter icing any day!

I love carrot cake but not all the frosting on and in it.

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 13:09:15

I love an eccles cake. No frosting at all.
Or bread pudding..

Totally agree

Caleo Fri 04-Nov-22 13:10:58

I agree. I stopped buying cakes as they taste much too sweet.

sodapop Fri 04-Nov-22 13:38:36

Same here. I much prefer a plain cake like ginger or a mince pie.

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 13:39:43

Just a,plain mince pie, mind.

None of this fancy icing or strange fillings.

midgey Fri 04-Nov-22 13:41:12

Hmm, I just like the topping - less interested in the cake!

Witzend Fri 04-Nov-22 13:43:45

Yes, the mere sight of those cup cakes with masses of sickly looking, often garish icing on top, is enough to make me feel vaguely ill.

Bring back nice little fairy cakes, with just a little icing! I still make chocolate ones for Gdcs’ birthday parties. Just a little chocolate icing and a Smartie on top.

Ooh, MissA, I'm with you: Eccles cakes, bread pud and plain mince pies - better than anything that's over-iced!

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 13:52:30

The bakery here used to sell a kind of bread pud with a pastry "lid" on.

That was delicious!

Septimia Fri 04-Nov-22 13:54:50

Yes, I've had that pastry-topped bread pud. Yummy!

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 13:56:17

I could just eat a dollop of that now.
Washed down with a cup of tea.

Caleo Fri 04-Nov-22 14:14:38

Miss Adventure, once when i as i London I had a puddingy thing like you describe in an ethnic Jewish cafe. It was very good. I have never seen that puddingy since , and I wish I could buy it from Tesco.

MissAdventure Fri 04-Nov-22 14:16:49

There was/is a Jewish bakery here.

I'm not sure if it was a covid casualty, but I'd like to check it out for that puddingy thing.

I agree with the OP, my kids would disagree vehemently 🤣

Kate1949 Fri 04-Nov-22 14:38:46

I rarely eat cakes but when I do the more icing, fondant, gooey topping the better.

eazybee Fri 04-Nov-22 17:27:37

I made a salted caramel cake for only the second time this morning before I read this thread. I had already reduced the amount of icing because I felt it was too sickly, and was nervous it would not get eaten; (made for a talk and meeting.)
Therefore I was greatly relieved that all of it went whilst the wholesome undecorated cakes were left. Will still reduce the amount of icing even further though if I make it again.

You and my granddaughter! grin

BlueBelle Fri 04-Nov-22 17:37:08

I totally disagree I LOVE the icing especially on Belgian Buns yummy yummy like * Midgey* I love the top better than the bottom
Licking lips I want a Belgium Bun now

Calendargirl Fri 04-Nov-22 17:51:01

Our local artisan bakery sells these extravagantly decorated ‘cup cakes’, very expensive.

When did they all become ‘cup cakes? What was wrong with fairy cakes or buns?

US import?

Gala Fri 04-Nov-22 17:53:57

Ooh MissA "fly pie". I love Eccles cakes but bought one the other day which had sort of sugary frosty on top. Yuck. So sweet it was inedible & ended up in the bin.😩
