Shall we crochet and knit hats and blankets for the vulnerable for the up and coming winter fuel crisis?

Hi all,

I have been trying to find somewhere on Facebook for a project to crochet hats and blankets to keep those that will be hit the hardest by the winter fuel crisis to help keep them warm this winter. But I am not having much luck. According to LBC radio one in four households will be cold this winter!! Shocking really.

So I thought maybe if I brought the idea to grans net that we could create our own project somehow? Do any of you have experience in getting a project off the ground? I am not much of a leader but I do have plenty of time on my hands to help and support someone who is a leading kind of personality. And I am happy to learn the ropes and store and distribute items created. I just can’t take the responsibility alone as I am not that confident to do so.

What do we think ladies? We could start with helping those in the Gransnet community who may need some extra warmth this winter and go from there? Perhaps all crochet granny squares and send them to a few volunteers who can’t crochet but can sew them together to create lap blankets?

I also have more wool here than I could ever get through in my lifetime! So I can provide wool to begin with for those who want to help.

What do you think?

I have loads of yarn too , I’ve run out of relations to make lap rugs for , so would be happy to contribute , but I can’t commit to organise anything
I think it’s a great idea

Brilliant idea ... could you get a few people to start a knitting class ... or get people to make them, then someone take them to a charity that distributes clothes to the needy ? Could get old knitted things & unstitch & re do them ... hats are one all way to keep warm, yes I have worn a hat in my home when been so cold ... all rhd best ... God bless

This is great Aggie. Thank you. There are two of us now. Two is a great start. Perhaps follow this thread to see how it develops and see if anything grows from it. Hopefully there will be enough of us with varied qualities and skills to bring this idea to life :-)

I was hoping on doing this remotely and as a gransnet community. I am not one to go out and socialise and set up groups really. A bit of a hermit. Lol.

But maybe some of the gransnet gang that are more social already go to crochet/knitting groups and can have crocheted squares sent to them to put together from remote crafters?

I guess I can sit and sew squares together and distribute to local causes. But I was hoping to work through some of my stash and create items. I can accept projects from all of you and distribute too. But that will only serve my area. Colchester.

If there were a few addresses that are also willing to accept and distribute projects in all corners of the UK then we could hit the need around all the country.

I expect you know about this but I came across this recently:

I'm not sure if these are really related to the winter fuel crisis but there is definitely a crisis going on.

Maybe there are gransnetters who know of other projects?

Tezhar Tue 30-Aug-22 09:41:48

Me again. I was thinking. If anyone is interested in sending me granny squares, hats, blankets so I can get this project started then inbox me for my address. Or I can start a what’s app group? I am sure once we get the hang of it, it’ll become quite straight forward? Maybe? Lol.

For those that know what they are doing with organising these kind of things. Please also either comment on this thread or inbox me. Even if it is just advice you are offering.

All and any help is what will make this work.

Thanks ladies :-)

I already make blankets for Knit For Peace. They mostly need very good sized ones, which take a long time. I’m making my current one with a much bigger (circular) needle and one strand of chunky plus one of DK, which should be rather quicker, not to mention warmer and cosier. I make it in 3 x 2 foot sections and sew them together. They’re pretty much random multicoloured - at least the DK - which also helps to use up my overflowing DK stash.

It's a lovely kind idea Tezhar ?

It also sounds like something the Women's Institute might be doing or thinking about, so maybe you could contact your local group and see if they would like some contributions?
It might be more manageable to tap into their contacts and distribution networks?

I used to knit blankets for babies, but could easily make bigger ones. I imagine that just taking them to the Salvation Army for distribution would work?

Hi NotSpaghetti,

These are great causes. thank you for suggesting them. I really wanted to aim right into the hearts of homes within the UK really. I have come across all sorts of projects during my research this last week or so. But nothing seems to be directly focusing on just the fuel crisis.

By doing something together on here we can help all our local communities together. I know of a few in my local area that I would approach once I have some warm items to offer them. And I would think that you ladies would know of worthy causes in your local area too that we could get stuff created for.

Plus it would keep us all warm this winter by being covered in wool each evening Lolol. So good for all.

Our Knit and Chatter group makes scarves and hats for the Seaman s project, but also decided to make scarves, etc for the local Homeless Assistance charity. Sadly, we have an excellent charity covering this in WsM .

Knit if you want to. I can't but I donated some clothing and I'm going to vote against the Tories next time.

Good idea, Tezhar

The knitters in our U3A craft group have been asked to knit for the local Food Bank as they will be distributing more than food. Someone has made a pile of lovely hats for children. Any items are welcome. Blankets are a good idea.

Don't know if anyone else has seen this? It's a 'Knit/crochet every day in October for Shelter' challenge - asking for donations to support your knitting marathon this month.

It's up to you to decide what happens to whatever you make. Items made might be donated to foodbanks/local charities or maybe sold to raise more money for Shelter.

Thank you for this info - my group currently knit for 'Knit for Peace' but would happily change to knitting for a local foodbank

I was wondering about knitting for a foodbank. Would you just turn up with a donated knitted item?

Our food bank would be happy to take any donated warm knitted clothes/blankets. I would expect other foodbanks would be the same.

Have now had confirmation that our nearest food bank would appreciate knitted items
